A Cold or Flu? Beechams can help
Think you are suffering from a cold or flu? Here are some helpful pointers to help you decide:
- Many of the symptoms of flu are similar to those of a common cold.
- Viruses cause them both, however the type of virus differs between colds and flu.
- Generally the symptoms of a cold tend to develop over a couple of days whereas the symptoms of flu have a more abrupt onset, often developing over a matter of hours.
- Flu doesn't usually give you the same congested heavy headed feeling that a cold does.
- Children tend to suffer from colds more often than adults as their immune system tends to be less developed.
Cold symptoms
Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two. Nasal symptoms, runny nose and congestion follow, as can a cough by the fourth and fifth days.
Mild temperature (fever) of around 38-39°C (100.4-102.2°F)
Sore throat/pain when swallowing
Runny or blocked nose
Coughing
Sneezing
Headache
Flu symptoms
Flu symptoms are usually more troublesome than cold symptoms and come on quickly. It can last between 2-7 days, however 4-5 days is more common.
Sudden fever – a high temperature of around 38°C (100.4°F) or above
Sweating and feeling feverish
General muscle aches and pains
Exhaustion/tiredness
Dry, chesty cough
Sneezing
Difficulty sleeping
